Literacy and Numeracy
Literacy & Numeracy in HPE
Health and Physical Education has the capacity to facilitate the development of literacy and numeracy in a number of ways. Throughout my university studies, I was given the opportunity to create a unit work that specfically identifies the literacy and numeracy demands and how these will be addressed through specific teaching strategies. The unit of work I created, focuses on a year 8 Fitness unit that requires students to comprehend and compose texts and use specific health terminology alongside regular dialougue with students in order to understand key concepts related to fitness. Furthermore students are required to analyse health and physical information and use statistical reasoning to identify trends and relationships in whole class fitness test results and use statistical language to convey their findings.

Literacy & Numeracy in Science
In Science, I gave my students the opportunity to develop sicentific literacy as they explored, analysed and communicated scientific information and concepts through many practical experiments. My year 7 and 8 students were able to conduct their own experimental procedure in regards to separating a given mixture using separation techniques and finding the energy efficiency of different bouncing balls. Furthermore students were able to comprehend and compose texts through the construction of tables, graphs flow charts, labelling of diagrams and through the intepretation and evaluation of data. Through Scientific Inquiry, students were able to develop elements of numeracy in regards to the measurement, collection, representation and evaluation of data. While my year 8 students calculated the density of irregular objects and ranked each irregular object from least to most dense my year 7 students analysed solubility curves to evaluate the concentration of salt water solutions.
